IKEA Bound!

I mentioned in Westin's 10 Month post that I was going to be going out of town for one night without him.  Friday morning, Lindsey and I will be driving to Dallas, TX to go to the IKEA store in Frisco.  I am SOO excited but SOOOO sad to leave Westin.  As you all know, he has never taken a bottle or sippy cup.  So I have not been away from him for more that 3 hours, 4 hours max.  I know it will probably be much harder on me than him but I'm still so sad/anxious/nervous about leaving him.  My mom has her work cut out for her.  ;)  I know he will love every second with her but I do not envy her fighting with him to drink milk from a sippy cup.  I keep going back and forth in my head asking myself if it is really worth it for a new rug and a few other things but I know it will be best for both of us.  I have to leave him at some point and I have full confidence that he will be on a sippy cup when I come back Saturday evening.  I trust my mom 110% and have told her she has to call me every hour and only tell me the good things. :)  Any tips on easing my anxiety will be greatly appreciated!  :)

With that out of the way, on to the fun stuff!  My #1 goal is finding a new rug for our living room and dining room.  This rug is my first choice:
I love the price, color and style.  I also love this rug:
I'll probably just have to make my decision in person.  I'm also going to get some wall shelves

I'm not sure if this is the exact one I'll be getting but I'll be getting two or three.  I also want to get some big frames to go on the shelves.
If I have some money left over I plan on buying this toddler bed.  I know Westin is a long way from a toddler bed but I don't know when I will be going back and I just love this one!

If I like this toddler bedding in person then I will probably go ahead and buy it even if I don't get the bed this trip.  It is only $20 for the duvet and pillow case. I can't really pass that up.
I know some of y'all are probably laughing at how crazy I am to be so excited to go to IKEA!  Haha  I have never been to one and have just heard so many great things about them.  I've been researching online and have my shopping list ready.  Hahahaha

If you have a favorite IKEA product would you mind sharing it with me?  I am also looking for pretty linen-like drapes and maybe some storage containers.  Also, I know I will really get caught up with all the kitchen gear and gadgets since my weakness is definitely kitchen things. :)  So feel free to share your links with me in the comments or email me if you think I should check out a certain product.  Thank you!

P.S.  I would also greatly appreciate your prayers for peace on leaving Westin.  I want it to be a positive experience for everyone involved.  :)  Y'all are the best!

Aw it will be so much fun! It's still hard for me to leave and my son is 18 months old. I love Ikea, just be prepared to be in there most of the day. They have it set up so you pretty much have to go through the entire store, which is HUGE and overwhelming :) Can't beat their prices though. I'm hoping to make a trip in the next month or so. Good luck and Westin will be fine!!

When my daughter was a baby she also refused anything but the breast - she was so attached that I would feed her before I left for work and then again as soon as I got home (I only worked for 4 hours)- she would wait for me to get home to eat! Then I left her overnight, and left some sippy cups with milk - when she realized I wasn't going to be there she drank them right up! I'm sure that's how it will work for Westin. Around hour 5 he'll be so hungry he won't have a choice but to take that sippy cup. But you've definitely got my prayers!

Hey girl. We don't know each other, but I went to school and was an EEE with Jennifer Francis. Anways..I am from plano / frisco. I thought I would tell you some places you MUST eat while there!!! There is an awesome mexican restaurant in the same HUGE shopping center as IKEA called Glorias! It is SOOO yummy! Also, there is a homecooking place just up the road on Main Street in Frisco called Babes! Don't miss out on their family style food and chicken fried steak. It's famous! I live in Atlanta and nothing compares to the food there! ha ha! Have fun!

My in-laws are in Dallas and besides seeing them that is my very favorite thing about going - it's only 30 minutes from Frisco and that means I get some IKEA time. I love that place! I would highly recommend their kitchen organizing products - they have the perfect plastic cannisters for the pantry and so many cool gadgets. There isn't a thing about that store that I don't love and I am also in love with that toddler bed! Have fun - your Mom and W will do great - enjoy your time away, you deserve a break too!

I went to the Ikea in Frisco in October. It seriously can take all day so plan for that. We did a walk through of the top floor before going back and picking out anything and then did the same for the bottom floor. It took hours but I got what I wanted without feeling rushed. I got some of the shelves exactly like you posted but in a different color. They were super easy to hang and look great. I have them in my craft room and bonus room. Very sturdy. Have fun!

Hi Shannon..
First of all, you are going to be SO overwhelmed at IKEA, it will be hard to make any decision!! OH...the storage containers!!

Westin will be just fine. I am at least your mother's age, my boys are grown now, but I remember the agony of that first time leaving them, especially when you are breast feeding. My first was just like that. But he also LOVED his grandmothers and he seemed to do things for them that he wouldn't do for me.

I had a friend once tell me that time away from your baby makes BOTH of you happier! When they get older and see you go off for a little mommy time, they will understand and recognize that it is just a part of what moms to do make life for them better!

You will love Frisco...! Have fun!

You are going to LOVE IKEA!!!! They have some awesome stackable glasses that I just LOVE - I bought mine for right around $5 for a dozen. They are THE BEST. You must also try the swedish meatballs with the gravy and lingon berry sauce - YUM! Oh, and be forewarned: the shopping carts are super squirrelly!!

sounds fun!!! Ive never been to one either, hope you get all that cute stuff. Love the bedding.
Happy Shopping!

Hello from a lurker...my favorite kids' items at IKEA are their train sets and floor rugs (the kind with roads) for my son. Super cheap compared to Toys R Us. Oh, and both my kiddos love to play in the tent I got from there for like $9 - it's great for summer in the yard. Oh, and another thing! :) I have their red riding moose for my son and it's very sturdy and cute. He and I both love it. Have fun! I'll say a prayer for you and Westin. No good mom can NOT worry, but I pray you'll enjoy your time away as much as Westin will love his time with his grandma!

We have an IKEA here in town...and it takes me at least 3 hours to get through it - haha! I love that little print for bedding. They have little stuffed animals like rabbit in the carrot car...very cute.

Have so much fun Shannon. I live about 10 min from that IKEA and it is true, you will spend most of your day there.
Hope it's everything your expecting!!!!

You're going to have such a great time (I am jealous!) Westin will probably do much better than you imagine. I always worry about leaving Aaron and he always has a wonderful time and does so well. It gets easier to send them over night after the first time :)

Hi Shannon! I am so thrilled you posted this! I have been looking at that bedding online and trying to decide if I like it for my son's room. It is so hard to see the details on the website because there is no zoom view. When you post pics of your purchases, could you do a few up-close pictures for those of us that want to see the designs up close? Also, really love the striped seersucker look on the back. So classic! Have a great time! It is always hard to leave my children, but a little Mommy time is so refreshing! :)

You're going to love IKEA! So fun! Make sure to follow the arrows around the store, if not you'll end up missing something!
Mommy time is a good thing, but I can so understand your anxiety. It takes lots of praying for me to be able to do it, but when I do, I'm always glad I did! & Thank the Lord for moms who are willing to keep their grandkids. I don't know what I'd do without mine! :)

What fun you're going to have shopping your way through Ikea. Their "Lazy Susan" is perfect when paired w/ the $1 buckets from Target.....a little spray paint and you have a prime Pottery Barn-knock off caddy. Perfect for art supplies or even silverware.

Hey Shannon, I am sure Westin will do just fine. I am confident he will catch on and things will go good for you after that. IKEA is a fun place I haven't been in a long time the closest one to me is about 1 and a half away so I dont get over there too often. Hope you have an awesome time!!

oh my goodness you are going to go crazy. I seriously about hyperventilated the first time I went to an Ikea. It is HUGE and there are so many things to look at! Take your time and plan to spend atleast 3-4 hours there. Also check out the section/room by the checkout I can't think of what they call it, but it has returns etc...that are marked down at even cheaper prices.

Things I have purchased & loved from Ikea: curtains-they are a good price too, I have bought the huge picture frames from there & everyone asks about them...I think they were $20 each. I second the lazy susan...I modge podged ours.

Leaving little ones is so hard, and it will feel the same with each child. IKEA is so fun. Take more money than you would ever think of spending ~ seriously! You will see why.....Also, you can't use crib mattresses with their toddler beds. You will have to buy their mattress ~ it's wider than a standard toddler bed. I am currently deciding if that's what I want to do for my LO. Don't forget to check out the curtains in both kids area and the drapes section. The quality is excellent and the prices are insane. Have a great time!

Oh my gosh you are going to LOVE Ikea. We have a big 3 story one about 45 minutes from us that we go to. I really can't recommend any one product. I have kitchen gadgets, frames, furniture, organizers, candle holders etc and anything we have ever purchased from Ikea has been great. You are going to love how cheap everything is. Can't wait to see what you come home with. All I can recommend is that you take a car with LOTS of room to bring home everything :-) Have a fun time.

You are going to DIE at IKEA. It is FABULOUS!!!!!!! I know the first time I left Annabelle, it was really, really hard. But you will have so much fun and be so overwhelmed with everything there is to see at IKEA that you'll be glad he's home and happy instead of having to sit in a shopping cart all day :) Have fun and know that the reunion with Westin will be so so so worth it!!!

IKEA is awesome. I used to live 20 minutes from one, and now that we moved to NC the closest one is 3 hours away. {sigh}

They have awesome stuff and SUCH good prices! Make sure you eat lunch there and take home some of their yummy cinnamon rolls. You gotta have the full experience!

I'll be praying for you! I know how hard that is going to be...we are going to NY in March. I am going to melt! I live close to IKEA, I wish we could meet up for coffee or something while you were in town. Have you started feeding Westin regular milk yet or still breast milk? I am so nervous to switch! Talk soon! Becky

You should check out the big bibs that includes the arms. If you think your little guy might be a messy eater, they are great!

My little girl never took to the bottle or sippy cup either. She only drinks from cups with straws. My peditrician & her dentist said this was the best option anyway. When I stopped breast feeding, we had a problem! We had to train her to take to the straw by cutting them really small and letting it "fall" into her mouth. Then we practiced sucking from it and it was so easy for her because the straw was so short. By the end of the first week she was a pro!

Enjoy IKEA, it is great!

I love Ikea!!! And I miss it. I used to live right near one and now the closest one is 3 hours away. Every time I visit family back home I make sure to hit up Ikea like old times. You will enjoy it so much!

Sorry you have to leave little Westin though - he (and you) will be fine. It is a short time away and he will be in great hands I'm sure.

Blessings on your fun trip - I'm jealous!

I love IKEA! I have to say my favorite items that I have purchased are some food storage containers. They come in a variety of sizes. There are two features that I LOVE about them. 1. They have a removeable "shelf" bottom, so if there is any condensation or moisture, it falls to the bottom, and the food is lifted out of it.
2. The top has a vented top, which is great for fruit and veggies, so they stay fresh longer.
I would gladly throw all my other storage containers away and replace them with these IKEA containers!

Here is the link to one of the containers:

Good luck! Wear comfortable shoes and a big car!!!

You are going to LOVE IKEA! It can be overwhelming because there is so much to look at but it will be fun! If Westin refuses the bottle and sippy cup your mom can always try to feed him with a spoon. I know it sounds silly but it worked with my son! He NEVER took a bottle...but did take a sippy cup at about a year old. Relax and have a great time!

MAN! Looks like you already got TONS of advice. So glad that Dallas Ikea is going to be your first Ikea experience-it is the BEST one I have ever been too. Hope you are taking a big car for all of your purchases:)! I'll say a little prayer for you two too. Also, I put my name on D&O waiting list:)!

I hope you are also planning to stop by the big Wisteria warehouse across from Love Field. It would be a shame for you to be so close and not go. Also, try out 5th Street Patio Cafe off of Main Street in old Downtown Frisco with a stop at Double Dip for frozen custard afterward. You won't be dissappointed...I can assure you!

Have a great time! Think of the day from a different perspective. It's going to be a day blessed with Grandma/Westin activities and fellowship between you and your friends! It's a win win situation! I'll still pray for your peace but know he's in such good hands. I know it's hard I have three children of my own and have been a SAHM for 11 years. I love being there for every moment but it's also ok to let them have their time with others who love them!

Looking forward to an IKEA update!

Shannon,
westin will do fine and I'm so thankful that your mom is only allowed to report good stuff.

As for Ikea, be prepared to be there a long time and exhausted. Make sure you have a camera on your phone to take pictures of things (since the displays are different than where you buy the stuff) or take a camera with you as well as a writing instrument (they have cards to write on.

Their kids area is amazing. My kids were older when we got an IKea in this state so I didn't buy a lot of it. However if you ever think that Westin will have a play kitchen (my son did) they have great stuff (pots/pans, etc) for that. They have bowls, plates and utensils for 1.99 each for kids...love them...the little bowls and plates would be really great...we use them everyday. I know that they have to have a lot more baby/toddler stuff too.

Oh my friend raves about the 1.99 milk frother. We had a more expensive one but my husband loves the IKEA 1.99 one.

I need to go back sometime soon and find shelves for the craft room/office.

Have fun.
Christi

Have fun!!! If anyone loves Westin as much as you it's your mom...so you are lucky he will be in good hands.

I would LOVE to be going with you!!! I can't wait to see what you get.

My mother-in-law bought the same bed in white to keep at her house for my 2 (now 3) year-old daughter. We love it! The "toddler" size is still large enough that I can snuggle with her and read a story but at the same time very compact.

Also, I understand going to great lengths to hit up an Ikea. When visiting California, I went 30 minutes out of my way before a 5 hour drive back to Vegas just to buy some throw pillows I'd been eyeing online. Oh and that was after my daughters and myself had had a SERIOUS stomach bug the previous 3 days.

Good luck with your first overnight away from the bambino! You'll love him that much more when you get back!!!

I'm so excited for your first IKEA trip! Even Ryan likes to go. Plus they have a cafeteria in case you get hungry. Next time you'll have to bring Westin with you. They have family size bathrooms with a nursing glider and free diapers in case you run out!

You can't pass up the fabric. It's funny, my aunt just mailed me the black and white fabric with the green birds on it. They have been sold out for months and you can't order it online.

Be careful about the toddler beds b/c I don't think they are the standard size that the crib mattress will fit. I could be wrong but then you have to buy all the bedding and sheets from them. Then again, that might be your perfect excuse to go back quarterly :)

You will have so much fun...Ikea is great!!! It will be hard for you to be away from Westin - I won't lie. BUT you need this. :) Cant wait to see your finds when you get back. Praying for you & Westin (and your Mama!) :)

Have fun!!

Just a warning- you may walk out of there with a headache it is a little overwhelming. BUT if you are going there just to browse you may be just fine. One just came to town here a couple of years ago and I FOUND YOU CANNOT GO WITH KIDS! or be in a hurry to get out of there (it is not an easy store to just run in and out of! I do like their store though. Make sure to check out their fake plants- LOVE THEM!!!! But have fun and don't worry about W- he will be just fine! He does have the best babysitter... Grandma!!

I BF my now 4 YO until she was 18 months and she would NEVER take a bottle either. You think you'll go crazy that first time you leave them and then every time after that gets a tab bit easier :)
Enjoy yourself!!
BTW, I have a 3 1/2 month (BF TOO!!!) and I wanted to get some ideas on the babyfood you make for Westin. When I begin feeding her I would like to try the homemade babyfood. Any tips?
Prayers are with you!!

I hope you had a great trip, found some great buys and that Westin is drinking his milk from his sippy now! Never question yourself for needing a little "you" time. That makes you a better mom when you come home! Hope you girlies had fun!

I totally understand your IKEA excitement...I've been to a couple of them before but our closest one to Charleston is FAR away! And you can hardly buy anything online at their website, too - sad!!! I LOVE that toddler bed and bedding, can't wait to hear what goodies you find!

Thanks for your comment on Mills' birthday, too! Around ten months is when he REALLY got "too busy" to nurse as much. He would usually have a great morning feeding, and a decent nighttime one, but throughout the day it was like 5 minutes tops!! My goal was still to get 4-5 feedings in, even if they were super short. Is Westin eating food, too? I know that our pediatrician said the more food they start eating, the less milk they actually need (as you approach the one year mark). Mills is just kind of getting used to the whole milk, and he's been a tiny big fussier than usual, too, which may just be a comfort thing that he's not getting from bfeeding...it's a little sad but the gradual thing has definitely made it easier. Or, it could just be that he's got FOUR teeth coming in on top all at the same time. Okay, sorry for the novel here, I just wanted to respond to your question, haha! Hope you enjoy the little break and that God will give you peace of mind! Those little breaks are totally needed sometimes - we all need a little "me" time here and there! :)
