Nursery Project

I wanted to do a little something special in West's nursery. Over Christmas Cody's Mom gave me Cody's coming home outfit so I thought that would be the perfect touch for the nursery. I had originally thought about a shadow box but after seeing the prices of those I went to plan B. I bought a 1/2 off open back frame, 1/4 yd of burlap and a yd of ribbon.

I didn't know what color burlap would be better on the walls so I bought both. You might need to click on the picture to enlarge it to see that the frame was too stark white.
I watered down some brown paint, brushed it on and then wiped it off with a paper towel to get a more aged look. (Not sure why this pic loaded sideways.)

Then I stapled the burlap to the back of the frame.

Since this frame didn't have a hook on the back to hang it, I used some ribbon.

It is stapled on the back just like the burlap.

I hung it on an upholstery tack.....looks a little better than a regular nail.

The finished product! His little shirt didn't fit too well in the frame so I left it out. Plus I think it is cute without it too. It is just pinned up there and it will be so easy to change this out later with pictures, West's coming home outfit or just about anything.

Remember how I asked you to help me with ideas for over his crib? Y'all had great ideas and a lot of the ideas were to put a verse or his name above it. I love this idea but the sweet sisters at Twice as Nice have offered to send me a vinyl verse that I was planning on putting over his closet doors. SOOOO, I didn't think I wanted more wall words over the crib. However, I found this antique frame that is the perfect color and size to hang over the crib.

For some reason the only thing I can see inside it is his name in vinyl lettering. I just don't think that is what I want to do though. I don't want too much vinyl in here because the wall space is very limited. So I looked around on etsy and I love this print:

It comes in many colors and I think it would be so neat to have one for all our kids in the future. So my thinking was that my dad could make a big chunky frame out of some moulding and we could nail that to the wall and put this in the middle. I would probably just tack it to the wall inside the frame because I just wouldn't want glass over his head.

Which idea do you like better? What would you hang in the antique frame? Do I just need to start from square one again? I'm making myself so confused! :) I just keep hoping it will all come to me one day. :)

I LOVE the antique frame and the birdy print.

My opinion is to go with the birdy print for over the bed, but still use that yummy frame in his room for something else. It's gorgeous!

Hope you're feeling well. Your baby bump is so cute!

I LOVE the frame with your husbands coming home outfit in it! It is adorable!! Everything is coming together for your nursery :)

Could you almost make like a memory board out of it? Cover a piece of light plywood cut to size with batting and bedding fabric and criss cross ribbon. You could tuck in newborn pics, use the round curtain hooks with the clips to hold pics, a few doctor appointment card, your birth announcement etc. You'll just have to move it when West get older and can grab things. Love what you've done so far.

How fitting! I love the baby clothes! Love that old frame and no matter what you go with, it will be beautiful!

what if you painted a bird similar on the wall in the middle of the frame?

You are SO creative!! I just love this!!

It really is such a small world isn't it?! So that is why you must look familiar to me... hello! You use to go to Antioch! :-) So fun! I'll have to give your blog link to my siblings to so that they can come "catch" up on you two as well. Andy and his wife Carman are also expecting their first child this year (in May) and then my other brother, Josh, and his wife Erika are about to go on the adoption list so they can adopt two boys. :-)

Mom did work at FBC Springdale until just a couple of months ago. I didn't realize y'all attended there. What a great church! Dad got a pastorate job in Galena, Kansas so they just recently moved. She really misses the church though and they people she worked with! :-)

Well I look forward to following your blog! :-)

(Sorry for the novel of a comment!)

I love the shadow box idea! I have kept an outfit of my daughters that is a red velvet coat/matching hat and mittins.. but wasnt sure of the expensive shadow boxes. We may just have to do this!! Too creative! I love that frame for over the crib, I agree with above poster...what about painting the bird and name inside of it. OR can the frame go above the window in his room???? Then use your print. It is gorgeous!

You are so creative! I love your ideas. I think the chunky frame is a great idea and the bird picture is precious.

Let's hope I can explain my vision- the frame is almost shaped like a birdcage, so... what about using grapvine and attaching it across the bottom of the frame and then with ribbon and some nice white/golden fake birds hang those down from the top? I hope that makes sense!

I think everything you are doing is PERFECT! love the bird print! You have amazing taste!

I loooooooove his your husband's coming-home outfit! And I loooooove what you've done with it! And I loooooove the antique frame you got for over the bed. You are inspiring me to finish hanging stuff in BOTH of my babies' rooms!! Oh, you are always inspiring me to do something... ;o) Hope you are feeling GREAT these days!!!

Absolutely adorable! Great alternative to the shadow box.

I love what you did with hubs coming home outfit! So cute!! That antique frame must be used--so beautiful! What about cutting out cardboard to fit the frame size, cover it with coordinating fabric from the bedding, and then good a big wood letter (from Micheals?) and paint it similar color and put in the middle. The letter would be the same as first or last name. Wood would be something different than the vinyl... just an idea. I like the bird pix, too though!

Paige said...

I love the antique frame. You have to use it in the nursery! It is too good not to. Could you paint a similiar bird in the middle of the antique frame above the bed? That would eliminate you having to use any glass about the crib, but you get both of the things you like in one. Just a thought..

Lana said...

I love what you did with the coming home outfit! That will be precious and it looks really good! I'm not much help for what to do over the crib. I can't wait to see what you come up with though!

Okay, Cody's tiny little coming home outfit is adorable in that frame!! The antique frame is so pretty...if you don't use it in his nursery, use it somewhere in your home - too pretty to go to waste. :)

You could hang the antique frame over his crib and have someone paint something similar to the birdy print in the center of it...it's a simple picture - wouldn't be hard to do.

Everything looks great, girl!

Shannon, I love Cody's coming home outfit and what you did with it. I have all my babies coming home outfits and baby dedication outfits together and my baby dedication outfit. I plan to shadow box them as well either in their rooms or in my hallway but your right they're very expensive as why I haven't done it yet. I like your idea. Might have to look into that. I love the old frame as well. I like Twice As Nice's idea. I was thinking of the same thing. I've kept all my babies preg. appt. cards, etc. I think it would be a neat thing for the room. Goodluck.

Lindsey said...

Ok, first of all, can you try to find Cody an adult-sized outfit like that? haha Anyway, I think what you did with it is so cute! You are so innovative. I think the bird print is so adorable, but it seems to be a different style than the bedding. Maybe hang it somewhere else in the room. I love the antique frame, but I don't really have any ideas on what to put in it. Sorry!

The frame with your hubs coming home outfit turned out great!

I REALLY like that antique frame!! Great find. It's so pretty.

I like the idea of stenciling some birds or other object onto the wall inside the frame.

Good luck! I am sure whatever you come up with will look beautiful because you have a good eye for design!

Love what you've done so far. How about combining your wonderful ideas to make a special project?
Use the frame, get chipboard letters spelling out West's name--covered with coordinating papers/fabric...and paint the bird overlooking the frame. Easily something that you can do for all of your children...
God Bless you and your family...

I would just hang the antique frame by itself and maybe put an initial inside it, either a wooden one of the cardboard ones from hoblob that you could paint, etc.

The frame with Cody's outfit is so precious! It's great that you will be able to change things out on the burlap.

The bird print with the name is so YOU! And I think it's perfect!

Love the jumper in the frame- looks SO timeless. I love the antique frame- I think I would go with that. What to put inside... what about painting something on the wall? Like painting a bird on the wall or something and then hanging the frame around it?

Chelsea & Nick said...

Not this scene or colors exactly, but this is kind of the idea I was thinking of- only smaller and inside the frame

Do you have any scraps of your nursery fabric left? You could put some of that in the frame, and then put something on top of it out of dark brown fabric. Other than letters, that is. :) Maybe a silhouette or something? That might look cool in that frame. . .

That frame is gorgeous! What a great idea.

Super cute! I love the burlap frame with the outfit! And great idea to keep it exposed so you can change it out easily. Especially with a little one, you'll want to be able to do projects fast & easy! :)

I have no ideas for the frame. I do like it though! How nice of them to send you the scripture!

love the idea of the outfit!! so cute! wish i had done that with my kids rooms. so maybe im just paranoid but i never liked the idea of hanging stuff over the crib..always afraid the walls will shake and it will fall??call me weird, im still like that:) why dont you put the vinly lettering over the crib?? or would it not take up as much wall space?? Lisa

Jessica said...

I love the outfit in the frame idea!!!!

I would go with the name over the bed. Maybe cut a piece of plywood to the shape of your frame, attach it to the frame, paint it a contrasting color to the wall and then put the vinyl letters on that. This way you won;t feel like the vinyl wording is so similar and it will really pop off the wall.

Stacey @ The Blessed Nest said...

Love that antique frame SO much! Perfect place over the crib!! :) I agree that I wouldn't do anymore words or letters over the crib. You have the monogram and initial pillow in his bedding, which is so special, you wouldn't want to take away focus from that. Plus if you do the wall words elsewhere in the nursery, it would be too much with even more words or letters above the crib.

I'd hang the antique frame above the crib, then either:
Add a shelf or 2 inside the frame and put a small teddy bear, or barn star, or pic of West with Mommy or Daddy on, or a boy silhouette on, etc.
Or, a pic of him (or 3) that you have printed on canvas, so it wouldn't hurt him.
Or, hang 3 hooks inside the frame & use padded baby hangars to hang some precious mementos.

LOVE that burlap wall hanging you did, too! SO cute!
Blessings,
Stacey

I love one of the earlier comments about a siloutte inside of that frame! That is pefect for that style of frame. Although you'll have to wait if you want the babies siloutte...BUT what if you put yours and your husbands looking at each other and then it would sort of be like you were looking over the baby in the crib. you could always switch those out and put the babies in there when he arrives if you wanted. LOVE the burlap frame with the outfit. His little room is coming along so great. I love how unique it is for a baby boy! No matter what you decide it will be great.

That's really a cute idea! Your nursery is really coming along nicely. We are forming an Arkansas Bloggers group and would love for you to link up with that. There are no obligations for that. Eventually, there will be an Arkansas Bloggers page with everyone listed by location. You can find that link on my blog.

I just realized you are in NWA. We are up there all of the time since our daughter and her family are there. She's an ob-gyn in Fayetteville. Whenever she has weekend call, we come help out with the 2 grandbabies...or whenever else we can wrangle an inviatation.

I love the antique frame. I was thinking you could make a dog silhouette in dark brown and cream (instead of black and white). It would tie in really nicely with his crib bedding, and still be a little boyish yet look very nice with what you already have in the nursery. I just googled "dog silhouette" and came up with this page http://www.colebrothers.com/signart/dogvector.jpg I like the second dog perhaps you could adjust the size and just cut it out on nice brown paper. Good Luck I am sure whatever you do will be beautiful.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving such a sweet note about my fireplace makeover !! I'm a new follower to your blog and LOVE your home and creativity. Your son's nursery is just beautiful ... classy, calming and he'll be lucky to call it his own. I love the simplicity of the bird print, too ... can't wait to see what you decide on. Take care, Becca

What a great idea for Westin's coming home outfit--love the shadow box. My girls gave me a cute treasure for Mother's Day a couple of years ago, and I put them in a big boxy shadow box, but I've never liked it. You've inspired me to use a different frame. Have you seen the latest Pottery Barn catalog? It's full of cloche's, birds, and even has platters with chalkboard paint in the middle. They must follow your blog! :)

The framed coming home outfit turned out precious. What a special addition to West's nursery!

I adore the antique frame. It's perfect for the room. I think it would look great above the crib! You definitely need to find a spot for it. I am tired and not feeling the creative juices, so I don't have any inspiration for what should go into the antique frame right now, but I do love it.

Cute nursery! What about a Family Tree in the Frame? You could even use the birds for the names! I alo like the memory box idea but would worry that the baby would destroy it when he is older.

So fun seeing the progress on your nursery...

In regards to your antique frame, what about getting a board and doing the chalk board paint thing and make it something that you can change often...hmmm...just a thought. You are so creative!

what about doing silhouettes of you and Cody when you were little? They're easy to make with a photo editing software. You could cut them out with brown paper that matches the room and modpodge them on. When he's a few months old and gets control of his neck more you could add his silhouette to the collection. Then when you have more.. you could keep adding

I absolutely LOVE the antique frame! I think it fits perfectly in the nursery. I would keep it over the crib simply because I like to mix textures and colors and lines. I think it's slightly curved shape will looks awesome over the sharper lines of the crib! However, I also love the bird print! I would so totally use it, too! I think the shadow box of Cody's coming home outfit is such a great idea... super cute!
