Sunday Song

My Country, 'Tis of Thee
Samuel F. Smith

My country, 'tis of Thee, Sweet land of liberty,
Of Thee I sing: Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountain side Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee, Land of the noble, free,
Thy name I love: I love Thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom's song: Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break, The sound prolong.

Our fathers' God, to Thee, Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing: Long may our land be bright
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King!
Samuel Smith went to Andover Seminary where he translated hymns from German to English. He was struck by the words of "God Bless our Saxon Land" and immediately felt the need to write a patriotic hymn. He said he finished within half an hour. My Country, 'Tis of Thee was first sung by the Juvenile Choir at a Sunday School Rally on July 4, 1831.

Thank you for posting this! I think most people have never read all the verses. And in these times especially, it's important to remember that there really is something special about this country. I appreciate that you're so open about your love of God and love of country.
