Random Post and Advice Needed

Happy Friday and Happy May Day to everyone! I am so glad the weekend is here because Cody comes home tomorrow from a week long work trip. Yay!

I LOVE hearing when people try a project that I have done. Sariah emailed me a picture of her bedroom and the curtains that she made. She hung them like I hung my living room curtains and I think they look great. I love the height of them and her bedroom is just beautiful. Look at her view! Her blog is a must read because she has soooo many great ideas.

On Wednesday night Zach and Katie came over to work on some invitations for an upcoming baby shower. He did great with his toys while we worked for awhile but after that he was ready for some more focused attention!

If you look closely you will see drapery rings hanging off his ears. He absolutely loved it! It is truly the simplest things that entertain.

When I came home from work on Wednesday I found a package. That is always exciting. Look at all these goodies that Kristyn sent me:

Aren't giveaways so fun! I love everything. I cannot wait to use the herb dip seasoning and the cute trivet. Hopefully I will have a scarf or two out of the fun yarn too.

Also, I got the key chain I ordered from Leslie. Her and her sister do amazing work. They have so many fun designs too.

Now, onto the part where I need your advice. You probably noticed from my last post that our front door is black. We painted it last fall and it turned out to be one of our best decisions.

So, my question is, should I paint the inside of the door black also? Here is a view of the door from the living room. The picture makes it look like the front door and dining room windows are on one wall but they aren't. The dining room is about 6' deeper than the entry. Anyway, the dining room is a dark chocolate brown and the living room and entry are yellow-y gold color. Do you think the black will look okay with the brown dining room? Thanks so much! Y'all are always the biggest help!

I say leave the door white. I think the black would look like a stark black hole.Just sayin!

You have an adorable blog. Love the front door. I'd keep just the outside black though.

Emily said...

I think the door would look its best as is. Leave it white!!!! :)

I wouldn't paint it black, but maybe a nice brown or khaki?

Mommy said...

I would leave it white.

Oh Shannon, I will agree with all the comments above. Leave it white. At my mom´s the doors are dark with really dark floor, it seems that the house looks too dark for my taste.

Leave the door white, so that it matches your trim.

JanMarie said...

I think a darker color would be really nice. It would help balance things out so to speak from that view with the darker (and beautiful!)dining room to the right.
I'm just not sure how that would look with white trim.
A nice big wreath in the right color and texture hung on the white door could have the same effect. It would help balance the dining room and darker light in the entry way.
Wow, that was a wordy opinion :) Whatever you do it will be great!

p.s. Thanks for stopping by today.

I would leave it white. Our front door is black too and the inside is white. The only thing different is that I painted the framing of my outside door (where yours is white) black as well. It makes the door look even bigger. :)

Marci @ All Things Wonderful said...

I like the white door, inside. It matches your trim, nicely. Great giveaway...Congrats.

{ Kiddos and K9s } said...

I think it looks great white... it matches your trim... but you are the artist in the home here... you know best.

Julie said...

In my opinion, I would leave it white. I think it looks clean and bright. ADORABLE home!

So happy to roam around your blog. It's lovely!! :) My first instinct was to paint it black because I love the color combo of your yellow with black. But then you have to get into matching your trim and that whole mess. :( Couldn't you strip it and repaint it white if you absolutely hate it?

Karyn said...

I think the inside of the door matches the trim on the rest of your house and is fine white.
Maybe if you get two pieces of black posterboard to tape to the door and live with for a few days...

Jeni said...

You are always winning giveaways...I don't even need to sign up for one if you have...it's a given you will win it.

I see everyone is saying the door looks best in white but I think the black would be stunning. Try the poster board thing maybe. You can always paint it back if you don't like it.

I love the way that girl did the curtains...they are pretty like that. I need to work on mine!

Have fun with Cody when he gets home.

Jeni said...

p.s. I would like the white trim with the different colored door...adds to the stunning look.

In my humble opinion, I would leave it white. Your house is so pretty and really looks like you have put alot of work into making it a cozy, welcoming place. :)

Here's a suggestion....go to the teacher supply store and get enough black bulletin board paper to cover the door. Tape it up to the door and see how you like it......or try the brown. then you will see if you like it dark rather than white....or paint a poster board if the paper is unavailable.....

Suzanne
your blog and your home is lovely!

Hi Shannon! I would leave black only on the outside of the door. The white looks good on the inside. Have a great day! :) Vanessa

We painted our front door a chocolate brown last year. I left the inside white, because all of my trim is white.

hi-d said...

I wouldn't paint the door black, but you could perhaps paint it the same color as the surrounding wall color and leave the trim white...hmmm...not sure...just kind of thinking out loud.

Jenna said...

Hi Shannon! I vote for team white! I like the look of the door matching your trim!

jenjen said...

Hi Shannon! Your black door looks great. I would paint the trim black on the outside to match the door, but leave the inside door white to match the trim on the inside.

Love your blog. You are so cute!

I am sooo not a decorator ( I just copy really well LOL) but I would say leave the door white.

Becky said...

Hey girlie!
I would leave the door white because it matches your moldings, but that is just my personal opinion. Your nephew is the cutest thing! Leslie and her twinkie are so good! They remind me of me and Bon a lot! I love my owl crystal necklace she made me! Enjoy your crystal *bling* *bling* and have a great weekend! <3 Becky

I'd leave it white. Or, if you want to paint it, maybe paint it the same color as your walls so it blends.

duchess said...

I'd probably leave it white but you could hang something on it. My mom has a simple wreath on hers & it looks nice.

Jennifer said...

I'm glad Cody gets to come home tomorrow! The pictures of Zach are too cute! He is really starting to look like a toddler to me! I like the door white, but I know whatever you decide to do will look great. It always does! :)

And I'm almost finished with your book so I will send it back next week with Josh. It's really good!

Rambling Girl said...

I would leave it white since your trim is white...that just my opinion...but I love your front door...You know I want one but the contractors said it would bow out if I did it because of the sun shines on our porch...

honeysuckle said...

Shannon, It is best to keep all the trim the same color so on the outside door, I'd paint the trim black and on the inside door I'd keep it white to match the rest of the trim in the house. You always do a great job of everything you do though. Keep it up!

ST. MICHAEL'S WIFE said...

I disagree with most 'cause I say go black! I can't remember whose blog I saw it on, but someone else had mostly white molding but did a few doors black, and it was stunning! In fact, this summer, as soon as school is out, I am going to paint the outside of our front door black AND I am going to do the inside of the door, as well! I think it will be AWESOME! Heck, go for it, Girl! Be brave! (As we used to say at the pool hall, back when I had my pool-hall ministry -- LOL -- "Not guts, no glory!")

Hey girl!! I love your kitchen but can't find the post and couldn't post a comment for some reason on the one from Kelly's!! But you know I love it!!

Hey Shannon! I love those window treatments~she did a great job! I sent the picture of what you did with the hooks to my sister, so if she ends up doing the same thing, I'll send them your way! I think it would be fun to paint the door a color on the inside...can't wait to see what you do :)

Kate said...

I have the same predicament in our kitchen. The outdoor green color isn't right for indoors, so it's just beige. Blah. But I think I like yours better white than black due to the dining room wall color. I like somebody else's wreath idea if you think the plain white is boring. Keeping it white makes my eye keep moving to the other room's color and such.

Ally0005 said...

Pretty house!!! I would leave it white.
You could also paint it the same color of your walls if you want it to blend in.

Shaila Creekmore said...

I meant to post this for you last week. http://thecreekmorefour.blogspot.com/2009/04/i-love-my-cricut.html I did not paint the front door, but did "Welcome" in white. I don't think I would paint the inside of the door. I love it from the outside, but not sure if would look the same inside.

Jennifer said...

I would definitely leave the door white - with all the white trim close by...it really goes well. By the way - the black outside is too adorable!

linda said...

Shannon, we got new doors last year and painted them black also. I didn't paint the inside black but I stained them a dark brownish color. A dark stain would go with your chocolate walls in the dining room too.

I did leave the trim around the doors white to go with the white baseboards...it looks great, and I'm pretty picky. Let me know if you want to see what it looks like. I'll take some pictures for you.

Amanda@Imperfectly Beautiful said...

YEs, yes, yes...absolutely paint the inside of the door black! I think it would be gorgeous. Did you see the post on this very same issue at Kari and Kijsa's blog? They has some lovely pics of doors painted black on both sides. Good luck. Let us know what you decide.

Just went back and read all the comments, and I can see I am in the huge minority here. I'm sticking to it though, and bucking popular opinion. I think the black would be stunning and classy!

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I would definitely paint it black. I have been thinking about doing that with my door, which is black on the front of the house, but white inside, like yours. I think it would be beautiful! :)

Oh I think black would look great!!! we painted our doors inside the same as the outside (and we have white trim)and it looks so rich- very warm!-

I think you should leave the door white on the inside. I've never seen a black interior door. Usually the inside color matches the other doors inside the house.

Liz and Garth said...

I agree with everyone! I think you need to leave the inside of the door white. Your house looks beautiful!!

CRICKET said...

I would either keep it white or change it to the color of the surrounding walls like hi-d mentioned. Good luck with your decision. You have a beautiful home.

There's No Place Like Home said...

Paint the door black and leave the trim white! It would be stunning and your eye would go from the great black light fixture to the black door. The white trim looks very clean and crisp against the black. You could then add a vinyl phrase to the inside of the door like Come Back, Thanks for Visiting, Travel Safe etc,

A white door is so expected and the rest of your house appears to be warm and inviting and the white door looks like it was overlooked.

My front door is red on the outside and red on the inside with the sidelights painted red and all of the trim is white. I'll be happy to send you a photo...

Jill -Forever and Ever House said...

I just love your entire house. My vote is to keep the inside door white. :o)

Abby said...

I would keep the inside of the door white. i think it looks great the way it is and I think if you painted it black it might stick out more than you want it to.

Lana said...

I wish I could offer some advice here, but I think white or black will look good! I'm not sure??? Wish I could be more help!

lise said...

I'd paint the door RED - those red pillows really pop in the room and I love red with the brown walls. White shows fingerprints and is boring. Go for the RED!
Love your blog.

i have a black front door (and pantry door, too) and the inside is black as well. i loved the curtain idea when you posted it. it really works above the bed. remind us, were those key racks from Hobby Lobby?

Julie H. Schaal said...

just to add-i guess i like the fact that my black door stands out and isn't too matchey from the inside view. I say go for it and paint it black!!

Lori said...

I think you should keep the inside of the door white. It goes perfectly with your trim and baseboards.

TCKK said...

I don't think I'd paint it black.

Hayley said...

Hey Shannon, I would leave the door white. Think it might be too harsh on the inside.
So thinking of painting by front door black too.

Ruby Red Slippers said...

I like it white with the white trim-just my opinion...hope you show what you do-

Katy said...

My first thought was to go black because it does look stark and bright.
I'm thinking maybe a light khaki color.
My thought here........I don't necessarily think your door has to match the trim in your home. I just kind of think the rest of your home is painted, therefore making your door look "un-finished".

Katy said...

Another idea, put something black and tall in that entry way...maybe not tall, but noticeable. An inexpensive black chair that you paint or an entry table w/ mirror above it....just to add some interest to your entry. (maybe you already have this and i just cannot see that wall on the right)

or....i've also heard of people putting textured paper (grass paper, cloth or something) on their doors for a "textured" look. I don't have an exact word for this type of paper, but I know what I'm talking about in my head. (he he)

Hey: try painting the small nooks (the rectangles) in the door the same color as the wall next to the door. see what that does...you might like.

ok....getting too involved with my creative thoughts here and your door.

Oh paint it red! What a gorgeous pop of color that would be

i am so excited that you posted this question. i have the same door situation and i've asked myself this recently. looks like most people agree on leaving it white...so maybe that answers my question too:)

I think that the white looks best with your trim and may be to dark if you paint the inside of the door black in my opinion.

I'd say paint the front door black-mine is;)

thanks for the mention shannon! enjoy! I'm thinking white for the door

I read all the comments and I realize I am in the minority, but I think black would be lovely. I don't think it matters that you have a brown dining room. We actually have a brown study not far off the kitchen (visible from the kitchen) and the kitchen is full of black beadboard accents. Not a problem. Still looks great because there is a little bit of a separation. I think the same thing goes for your house.

Can't wait to see what you do!

Tracey said...

I painted every interior door of mine black and left all my trim white. It is wonderful! I love it. We have a newly built has and it has very little "aged character" but this really did the job. All of our bedroom and bathroom doors are painted regardless of the colors of the rooms and the exterior doors are painted on the inside also. People say every room needs a little black and this is one way to get that done. I recommend you paint the door.

Kristy said...

I've been thinking about painting my front door (the outside) and have a question for you - did you just paint the front and not the sides of the door (the part that goes against the door jamb)?

What color is the paint in your entry and living room?

Shannon said...

My living room and entry are a color match from Sherwin Williams. The color is Pratt and Lambert's Peanut Shell. Sherwin Williams has the code.

Hey Shannon! Just popping by to play 'catch up'! You know, we painted ALL of our interior doors black and left the trim white and I love it! We just did the staircase railing last week and left the spindles white. It is a fun fresh look and it really 'pops'. I can't wait to see what you decide on! My hubs thought I was truly off my rocker when I told him what we were doing but he went with it and loves it now, too! Good luck hun! Les

Karen said...

I painted the inside of my door black about 2 years ago and love it. It looks like the front door now and not just another interior door - no black hole.

Katie said...

Leave it white in the inside black on the outside, just my 2cents (: Your style it great.
