Brass Headboard

Thankfully I was able to finish the headboard this weekend. I was so excited when the rain held off just long enough to get it painted. This is what the guest room looked like before....no headboard.

Here is the brass headboard I found for $48.00.

I think the consensus was to paint it white and I'm very glad I listened. I think it looks really old now. Like an antique iron bed.
I don't like to attach my headboards to the bed because I always want them to be taller so I put two bed risers under it. That made it much taller but I had to rearrange the pictures above it.
Once I moved the pictures up and out a little bit I had a big blank space. I put the little plate, that I recently found, in between them but I think it is a little small so I will be on the look out for something that is a little better fit.

Thank you all who took the time to give your advice on the color. I think maybe down the road if we ever have a little boy then I will spray paint it black. I have seen some real antique beds that have been painted black I think they look great.

Also, some of you might be wondering how I painted it. I thought I was going to give it a light sand until I rubbed the sand paper on it and my teeth almost fell out of my head because it was the worst sound in the world. Worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. I just spray painted a light coat of primer and then sprayed about two coats of the white paint over that. I got the spray paint at Lowe's and it was the Valspar brand in the satin finish.

Just found your blog! I will now be reading and getting ideas.

The headboard looks so great, what a lovely room!

Cute blog! The black would "anchor" the bed in the room, a little more. I have an old iron bed that is off-white and chipping and in storage. I have been trying to decide how to paint it. I know, now, that I will definitely use spray paint. Thanks for the idea!

That makes a huge difference! Love it! That could be cute in black for a little boy!

I have a head and foot board that are made of iron and I need to have those things de-rusted and then painted for the guest room :)

Great idea!

The headboard looks great! You had me cringing when you were describing the sound of the sandpaper on the brass. Ewh....I know what you mean. I'm glad it turned out so nicely! This room looks so inviting...like a bed and breakfast. I'm coming over soon...ha, ha....just kidding. :)

I love the chunkiness of the headboard. It looks great. I had an old brass headboard and spray painted it black for my sons room so I can tell you black will look good too if you ever need to change it.

Everything looks great Shannon! I had to laugh at the sandpaper story. It would have driven me nuts too!

I hung my white spray painted plates yesterday. They look nice but aren't shiny at all. My husband says they look like plastic plates (but really, what do men know about painted plates anyway!) Did you spray paint the plates above your new brass bed? They look shiny and beautiful.

Love it! Can you tell me more about the bed risers? I love the look of a high bed. We have a cherry bed with attached headboard and footboard. Would that work? Where do you buy them? Can't you see them or are they covered by bed ruffle/dust ruffle? Melanie

Mandi said...

It looks really great!

Melanie, I'm not sure how to get a hold of you to answer your question. When I click on "Greg" it says that the profile is not available and you didn't leave an email address. Can you either leave your email address or email me at row35401@yahoo.com. I will be happy to share more about the bed risers. Thanks!!

spraypainting brass is my new favorite thing. There are so many brass pieces out there that people are getting rid of and I am gladly taking them off their hands. Can you believe I gave a brass headboard to GW last year before I started blogging. I hold onto everything and had it for 5 years in the attic..UGH...the one time I was a good girl and purged, and so regretted it...hee hee :)

I love your blog! Thanks for all the great decorating tips! I've taken your advice and put a table next to my washer and dryer in my laundry room, like you did. I took your idea about trying to make it look like a regular decorated room. Also, I just got a silver tray at a flea market to try the chalkboard paint idea with. Thanks for the inspiration. The bed looks great!

Since you have all the white accents, the white headboard is perfect. And change can be so easy, if needed. I agree that something a little larger in between the frames would be nice. And I like the idea of the risers. I want to put them under our bed so we can double-stack the underbed boxes. We can always use the extra storage.....

That looks gorgeous Shannon. I have been on the hunt for an old brass or iron daybed with no luck. I decided to "fake" a daybed and make an upholstered board to go behind the twin bed longways. Does that make any sense? I sound confusing. Anyway, thanks for the beautiful inspiration, as always.
