Sunday Song

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty
Reginald Herber

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, Blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns Around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim Falling down before Thee,
Which wert, and art, And evermore shall be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see.
Only Thou art holy; There is none beside Thee
Perfect in power, In love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, Blessed Trinity.
On April 21, 1783, Reginald Heber was born to a minister and his wife in an English village. While at Oxford he found his love of poetry. After he graduated he succeeded his father and became vicar. For sixteen years he served his church and wrote 57 hymns. It was his desire to have them made into a book that could be used by the church all year. The Bishop of London did not like the idea. Heber also had a heart for missions and specifically India. He served in India for 4 years until he had a stroke and died. His widow found his 57 hymns and had them published into a book called, Hymns Written and Adapted to the Weekly Service of the Church Year.

This is one of my favorite hymns. Every time I see it in the bulletin as a song we'll sing it just makes me smile and yes, I sing it at the top of my lungs. I may not be able to carry a tune but I think the Lord will appreciate the heart behind it. :)

I agree with JanMarie as well, hearing it acapella is absolutely beautiful!
