Creative Organization

There is something we can do about the everyday things we live with but do not like to look at everyday. You have to have laundry detergent, dental floss, pens, etc but they don't have to be an eye sore. I like using pretty things to hold practical, boring things.
I'm addicted to chapstick and have to have it in every room. Beside my bed I keep it in this cute little bird box. That way I know where it is, it doesn't roll off the table and I don't have to look at it all the time.
Dental floss. If I didn't see my dental floss everyday then I would never use it. I didn't want to have the floss just sitting out on my vanity so I put it in this small crystal vase.
In my office I needed something to keep my pens in but didn't want to go buy anything or use something that was specifically for storing pens. So I used a milk glass vase that I already had. It is functional and pretty at the same time.
I love powder laundry detergent but not the big boxes they come in. So I looked around my house and found this box in a closet. It holds one regular size box of detergent so I don't have to see the ugly boxes everyday.
I know a lot of people put bath salts in apothecary jars by their tubs but I didn't have anything to scoop the salts out with. So I found this perfect little spoon at Walmart in their "antique kitchen gadget" section. I think it is a sugar ladle but it works perfectly.

So look around your house and see what everyday things you can spruce up. It is fun to do and way more fun to look at things that are pretty.

My Weakness

WARNING: Major picture post!!

I thought I would show you my very real weakness for baskets. I saw this done over here and thought it would be fun. It seems like almost everywhere I go I pick up a basket if it is a good price. Mostly from garage sales and flea markets. They can have so many purposes! My favorite are the natural woven ones but I like the metal ones too.

You can mount them on the wall...

Or store dry goods in them....obviously this is for baking. The only kind of cooking I do. FYI-I got three of these from Oops for $3.00 each.

I love this handmade basket hanging over our bathtub.
They can be very practical...
Holding magazines by the sofa...
This might be my favorite basket because of the green color and the great $2.00 price at a garage sale.

I use this one to store books by the bed.

Cody thinks this is a shoe basket...
I even love basket trays...
They can be used for seasonal storage...
Or even to hold a plant....fake of course.
These are the most practical baskets I have. They hold file folders for our household stuff. I could go on and on and on but I would love to know what ways you incorporate baskets into your home.

Karen Kingsbury

On Saturday my unbelievably sweet husband took me to Branson (2 hours away) and stood in line with me for an hour and a half so I could meet Karen Kingsbury!! She is my all time favorite author. I was so excited to meet her and have her sign some books. She was really sweet and took a picture with everybody. If you have been living under a rock and don't know who I'm talking about you can read up on her here and see a list of all her books. If you haven't read any of them, then I recommend starting with the Redemption Series. Thanks for taking me Cody!

Hard to Ignore

This has been on my heart to share for awhile now. I'm sure a lot of you have seen this video. It is a great reminder to know and believe the Truth.

Romans 16:17-20

"I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I am full of joy over you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil."

The Old Rugged Cross

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suff'ring and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain.

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above to bear it to dark Calvary.

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true, Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then He'll call me some day to my home far away, where His glory forever I'll share.

Upside Down

I saw this done in a gift shop here and thought I could reproduce it. They took a wall shelf and turned it upside down. I didn't buy their shelf but found the exact one at a flea market. I haven't found a good spot for it yet but I'm sure there is somewhere I could hang it. The key is that your shelf needs a little edge on it to hold your things. Also, hang it a little above eye level so you can't tell it is upside down.

Creating Space

I wanted to find a way to create more space in my kitchen and decided to take the doors off the cabinets over my refrigerator. I didn't really use that space for anything and I'm always looking for more space to display pretty things.
I know the piece of wood in the middle is kind of an eye sore but I didn't want to do anything permanent in case we ever moved. Although I think about removing it all the time.
So look around your house and see if there is anywhere you can create a little extra space. If you have done something similar let me know. I would love to take a look.

Bless Our Nest

My mom surprised me with this cute sign this weekend and it inspired me to change my blog name. I love it!
While in Searcy this past weekend we had a chance to go antiquing and I found some great white plates to start my plate collection. I want to put an arrangement of them over our bed.
I found this little treasure at TJ Maxx this week and can't wait to find a place to use it. It might be for special occasions though because I can only see using it for food. Any suggestions? The best part is that the rabbit unscrews so I could change out the top if I ever found something that could be screwed on (because things like that are everywhere! ha!).

Favorite Garage Sale Find

A few weeks ago I posted about my favorite flea market find. This china cabinet is my favorite garage sale find. I have no idea how old it is, the maker, or anything about it for that matter.
I think I stole it from the man for $100.00 but I didn't feel bad for long! Interestingly enough I've never used it for displaying china. In our first house it was more of a bookcase and here it is more of a display case for accessories.
I re-arrange it often but have loved having a lamp in it. I got the idea from my favorite store. No, not Oops. This is a real store called The Gift House. My husband cut a small hole in the back for the cord to fit in.
This is a small collection of glass bottles that my mom has gotten for me. Usually at every garage sale or estate sale she picks one up for me. I love that they are all similar but very different.

Live and Learn

My beautiful, young hydrangeas died last night. They had so much potential! I feel sorry for them because if someone else would have bought them they probably would have lived. They looked so sad. Everyone told me to cover them with a sheet and I even got my shoes on to go outside to do that but I guess I got distracted. I woke up to a hard frost and heard the weather man say it was 22 degrees. Who would have thought 22 degrees is the middle of April?!?! I will not be discouraged though! I will give it a couple more weeks and try again. I will NEVER forget to cover my precious plants again. I was going to post a picture but they were just too sad looking. Let's remember them looking this way.

What happened?

I put a post up last night but it posted under the "Happy Birthday" post. I don't know why. Does anybody have any suggestions for fixing this? Thanks! I'm looking forward to catching up on all my blogs today!

Happy Birthday Babe!

Today my sweet husband turned 29! We celebrated a little today with gifts and dinner but really celebrated it at Family Night on Monday night.
This is hard to imagine for some people (like me) but Cody HATES sprinkles on his cake!! Since it was his birthday I felt like I should make what he requested which was white cupcakes with white icing. Boring!! You don't know how hard it was for me to not put anything on them!
Whatever makes you happy babe. The candles were somewhat of a decorative touch at least. Thanks Katie for supplying those!
Cody's big excitement of the day was that he got Lasik Eye Surgery. He has been wanting this for a long time so he was really excited. This is him afterwards with his goggles that he has to sleep in. He is in bed as we speak.
I hope your birthday was everything you wanted it to be. I love you so much!

Hydrangeas

Cody built me a flower bed last Sunday and I could not be happier! We found some rock in a trash pile at a construction site and used it to outline the bed. I planted three hydrangea plants in it and I cannot wait to see them bloom. We planted them right under our bedroom windows so we will be able to see them all the time.

These are the first plants we have ever planted from scratch...like removing the grass, outlining the bed, planting, and then mulching. It is a big deal to us! I will be reading up on how to care for hydrangeas. I'll be watching all spring for their first bloom. If you have any tips for caring for them please share!

Now I'm going to go cover them up because it is supposed to frost tonight!!

Front Porch

One of my other great Oops finds was a metal container. I saw a great idea on someones blog when I was lost in blogland to put hydrangeas in a wall pocket thing. Hydrangeas are my favorite flower so I had to try it. I think hers were real but we all can't be so lucky.

Now one would think this would be an easy task but not for me. I do NOT do flower arrangements. I mean I have tried and it is not pretty. How could I mess this up? Well for starters, I didn't have wire cutters and the stems were about 300 feet long. So my husband man-handled them. Then they were all about an inch too tall. So he fixed that with a lot more effort. When I was ready to stick them in I realized I only had about an inch by inch piece of foam. So I had to stuff paper towels in there and surprisingly that worked.
I think it turned out ok for all the hang ups we had. They haven't even fallen out yet! Plus there was a surprise waiting for me the next day from Cody...wire cutters. Maybe next year I'll have real bright green hydrangeas because Cody said he would make a flower bed in our back yard under our bedroom window and I am going to plant some. I've only been waiting like 3 years....

Spring Fever

My favorite day of spring is when Cody and I work in the yard. While he was mowing I was trimming our monkey grass which should have been done weeks ago but that is life. Anyhoo, when he was finished we went to buy mulch and flowers. Remind me to never take him along when shopping for flowers. This is why my pots look so bare. He barely let me go down two aisles!
This is on our back deck. I got the spiral things and wire cart at a garage sale last year. In the fall I like to decorate the cart with pumpkins and mums.
It was a great Saturday. The weather was nice and we got everything we wanted to do accomplished.

Before and After

One of my projects this weekend was to paint the frames on some pictures I got a couple of weeks ago at Oops. I got the pair of pictures for $12.00 and ALMOST bought one about a month ago for $30.00 at a decorating shop. I'm glad I didn't!
Here is the original color of the frame. Not a bad color but not my style. It was a little too silvery-gray for my house.
I wanted to put the pictures over this guest bed. It doesn't have a headboard (another project for another day) and I was tired of the picture. I got that picture for my 16th birthday, almost 10 years ago! My friends always thought it was funny I wanted a picture when I was sixteen.
I painted the frames white. I tried to distress them but I am not good at that so I painted them solid white.
I am happy how this turned out. In real life there is more of a contrast between the wall color and the white but it didn't turn out like that in the picture. I got the platter from my grandmother and it was the first dish I have ever hung. I want to hang more!! I love the look of plates on the wall that I have been seeing on some of your blogs. When I walk in the room now it looks like a lot more "cottage-y". So thanks for the inspiration!

Thrift Finds

I have been inspired by a lot of you and especially Heather to go "thrifting". So on Thursday I went to my first thrift store. It was an experience! It was a huge store and I was very surprised at how busy and crowded it was. I only found three things that added up to a grand total of $1.00 but it was still fun. I will definitely have to go back because they were putting stuff out as fast as they got it. I actually saw a lady standing by the back door with her cart and looking over everything before they brought it out.
Here is a cute picture of Zach from last night's family night. He was VERY talkative and VERY loud last night. The more we turned up Survivor the louder he got. He was all smiles though and as cute as ever.

The paint is drying on my "project" as I type so I will show some before and after pictures soon. Don't hold your breath though because they are really not all that great. Pretty simple and basic actually.

Oops!

One of my all time favorite stores in my area is called Oops. I do not know why it is called this or do I care because I just love it so much. They buy overstocks from stores and their latest shipment has been from a tornado damaged warehouse in Memphis. However, none of their merchandise is ever damaged. Maybe it is called Oops because they buy from stores that say, "Oops! I overstocked!". My husband says it is called Oops because when I come home I say, "Oops! I bought too much!".

They have stuff that is in all the decorating shops around town but for rock bottom prices. I'm talking like garage sale prices. It is great! I found this great piece today for $11.00 and the frame for $3.75. Crazy! I looked at this exact piece at a decorating shop in town for $60.00!!! Not even kidding.
I thought I could use this piece in several different places. I could use it as a centerpiece or for a party with food and utensils in it. I got the idea of putting it in the bathroom from The Nester's latest post at Blissfully Domestic. What else could I use it for?
My question for you is do you think I should paint it? Right now it is a gray color but I'm thinking I might like it in a cream or maybe even a dark brown.
So from now on, when I say I got something at Oops you will know what I'm talking about and you can be jealous. Just so you are not too jealous, you must know that it is a definite hit or miss (usually a miss) but lately it has been a big hit.
You can look at Kelly's post here and here to see about her latest Oops find.
