Before and After

I have been wanting to do this for awhile. Before:

After:

I think black doors or stained doors (or any color but white) look so much better than regular white doors. Our door was just your standard white metal door that looked like it belonged as a garage door, not a front door.
I would love to have one with glass in it but until then this will do. Plus it was so easy and a lot cheaper than a new door!
I got the paint at Home Depot and it was the Behr brand. The guy who helped me said it was a new kind of paint that didn't need primer and it didn't matter if your door was oil based already. It basically goes on anything with no preparation. It only took about two coats and dried within a couple of hours. The color is Black Suede in a semi-gloss finish.

Your door looks great, what a huge difference for a little paint...you know I love black! I just finished painting my fireplace mantle black, I'll have to post pics soon.

Oh, it looks so good.
I love black on anything. :)

I also like the brick detail above - very nice.

hmmm...this could get me in trouble. I've really been wanting to do something about our front door!! This is motivating!

What an improvement! It looks great and sounds like it wasn't too hard to do!

I love it! I have been wanting to paint our ugly green door a deep red or some color. I really want a glass door too!

Aimee said...

What a great makeover! I've been dying to paint our front door red for quite awhile now... tell me, did you take the door off its hinges, or just paint it still hung?

Christine said...

The door looks awesome! I have a dull brown painted door (original from builder) but I want to paint it a brick-red... I'd love to know exactly what the paint is called, I know it's by Behr, but is there a name of the paint?

Thanks for sharing!

Rambling Girl said...

I love it! I wanted black but our contractor along with several others said that the sun would bow out a black door. I kept trying to see about one but so many said this we just went with a red door...but who knows it might be because the sun comes up from where my door sits and also I don't have a inset like yours does...anyway I would rather have a black one. The next best thing was red for my GA BULLDAWGS!

Jill said...

What a difference! I, too, have a boring metal white door and glossy black is in it's near future! Now I know what color and kind of paint to buy! Thanks! I've been checking your blog for a couple of weeks. It's on my daily blogs to check, so keep sharing great things!! :)

I love black doors because whatever you place on them just pops! Your wreath looks great too! You are a smart cookie to just go ahead and give us all the details cause you know we would all be asking you, smile. I have never heard of that kind of paint...the name yes, but no priming...thats the way to go. Very pretty Miss Shannon! Your home looks so inviting. Hope you have a super great day!

Kathi said...

Love it Shannon!! What a difference a little bit of paint made!! I love the black too...it makes your wreath just jump out! It's gonna be beautiful at Christmas too.

I just put up some Fall decorating pics...come over & check em out!

I like it! I agree...anything but white makes a door look so much more welcoming!

Our door is wood and is stained. We restained it a year or two ago. I like it a lot. I sort of want a door with glass in it so it will let more light in the foyer (our front faces north), but then I think that people will be able to see in, or at least be able to see if we're home, and when people come selling stuff, I don't answer. And I don't want it to be obvious I'm ignoring them. LOL

Gorgeous, I love black and brick. Our door was wood stained, then painted blue to match the shutters...I decided to go with more traditional vs. country and we bought new black shutters and painted the door black, and our neighbors kept complementing us on how great it looked. I love black doors!

My Place of Peace said...

That looks great! Major difference!

Angela said...

I am so jealous! I've been wanting to do that for months! Derek finally found a paint that he thinks will work (since we have a glass storm door, we had to find a special paint that won't bubble up when it gets hot between the doors). He told me a few weeks ago that he'd ordered it from work (a building supply store) and had it on his desk. I remembered to ask him about it last night, and he got this blank look and said, "Didn't I bring it home?". Apparently he left it on his desk back in the office and someone must have gotten it and put it out on the sales floor. Bad thing is, he can't find it anywhere! Until he orders another can, I guess I'll just have to enjoy yours!

Kim said...

Thanks for sharing this :) I have a black door that needs repainting and I was kind of intimidated about doing it...afraid of streaks or peeling. I will try this brand!

WOW! I love the way that the door turned out. The fall wreath really pops on the black background. I can't wait to see some summer colored flowers on that black background. Our new front door is black with glass, but honestly, you lose a lot of the glass when you have window decor... Looks great! As always, thanks for sharing!

I love your black door! I have wanted to do this but too scared to attempt, silly me. Ok two questions then I will do it.
1. did you use a brush or roller?
2. did you paint the inside of your door, if so what color.

I so want to paint my front door--the white always gets dirty!

Katie said...

Haha! Well, actually I lucked out with the door, as it was on the house when we moved there. But...I wasn't so lucky with the bathrooms and kitchens...hot pink tile, floral wallpaper complete with bees and butterflies, and a teal green Corian countertops in the kitchen. So lucky in ways, unlucky in others... I guess I couldn't have everything, right! haha!

Love the black door! It just looks so sharp and regal in many respects. We also have a black front door. We have white trim with black front and back doors and shutters. I love the contrast with the house color which is a fawn color. It looks more pale yellow to me though.

Your door looks 100 times better. The black looks gorgeous with your brick. Our new place has a white door, and I'll definitely paint it. Probably red or dark blue. I'd love to have an apple-green door, but it won't work when the siding is blue and white with cedar shingles in the gables.
