Mantel Before and After

This past weekend my father in law and dad built out our mantel. As you can see in the before picture it was a whopping 5 inches deep. I was very limited on what I could put on it.

Before:

During:
After:

I have been wanting a large deep mantel for so long to decorate. Well, now that I have one, I have decorating block! I just put the same things I had up there for now. I'll probably have to live with it for a few weeks to get inspired. I know it will be great for Christmas because I have always wanted to put a nativity set up there.
Before, those topiary pots touched the wall and came to the edge of the mantel. I love the new depth. Five more inches makes a huge difference!

Every home must have a great mantle! Yours looks so nice. I can't wait until we get to work on our fireplace. We have some really nice gray marble that I can't wait to demolish!

That looks great--they did such a good job. Redoing our mantle is on our to-do list, but unfortunately ours will be a huge job.

They did such a terrific job!!!!!!! Awww...they must really love you, cause any other men would say it was fine the way it was. :)

Oh, how I wish I had a mantel.

That is beautiful...you'll lose the decorator block. I've always wanted a fireplace with a mantel to decorate...but this is Florida...we would melt if we used it for anything other than decoration. :0)

Your mantel looks great! I so wish I had a fireplace! We are actually thinking of an electric one for our downstairs family room because the cost of gas is going to be so high this winter, I just want it to look more custom. Maybe I will just add a larger mantel top! I love that clock, let me guess Oops?

It looks beautiful.
They did a great job.
I'm jealous - I have a stupid tv above my fireplace.
Maybe the new house will have a great mantel to decorate.
Be sure to show us what you come up with.

I LOVE the new mantle! Have fun decorating it when the ideas come to ya! :)

I really like the Happy Birthday banner in your before picture...do you remember where you got it?? Or did you make it?? My sons birthday is coming up and that would be perfect. :)

Looks great! I love having a big mantle! I've always wanted to put our nativity up there too. My problem is we have a raised fireplace so the mantle is too high for anyone to see it.

Can't wait to see how you decorate it!

Im jealous-so wish that I had a mantle. Can I have one without a fireplace. Not too sure my hubby would go for that. He already thinks that I decorate too much. I don't know why he would think that. What else is a girl to do? Cute finds! I am with you-I love fall and can't wait to decorate. I love summer too, but there is just not as many rich colors to envelop my home! I have two huge honey locust trees out front and come mid september-these babies turn vibrant orange and yellow. I look out the window and it is so beaituful! I love it, not the raking when they fall off, but I guess you have to give a little to get a lot!! Have a fantastic day!!

Though I am on vacation I had to visit...the mantle looks great! You will be able to decorate it all up now. I have a pretty small one too and that is a great idea to just build it out a little larger. Can't wait to see what you do for the holidays on that mantle now.

Ahhhh Shannon you saved me. I am in a mountain top cabin(very rustic) and no television, I at least have internet! I needed a creative boost, this is driving me crazy! Thanks for reminding me of how beautiful our homes can be! Great job on the mantel!

Very nice! It won't be long before the inspiration hits, I'm sure. My current mantle is about 5 inches deep, and it does limit the decorating!

I have two mantels in my house and one in pieces awaiting refinishing in the garage and guess what? Not a single fireplace in my house! I think your mantel makeover looks great and I can't wait to see it when you decorate for the holidays.

Great job on the mantel! I am wanting to add a little to our mantel, but it is a little ways down the list. Can't wait to see the seasonal changes you will have going on up there!

Blame your decorators block on the skinny mantel. Now that it's just the right size you'll start getting more ideas. And a trip to Oops might be just the place to kick start the creativity!
