Our Mantel

Kari and Kijsa have asked for pictures of our mantels. If you haven't been to their site it is a must. They have a new idea pretty much everyday. Our mantel is pretty simple. I love the watercolor hanging over it. My grandmother gave it to us. It is a painting of a cottage in the woods and is very peaceful.
Something strange about our mantel is that it is only about 6 inches deep. That is not very much! That is the reason why I don't have a lot of stuff on it. However, Cody's Dad is going to make us a "cap" with crown molding on it to sit on top so it will be about 10 inches deep. I will finally be able to put a nativity set on it during Christmas.

Here is our mantel during "life". It is very hard to get Cody to take a picture where he is not making a face but he is still cute!

I know this is supposed to be about the mantel, but I love the fact you have a hearth! I have tile on the floor in front of my fireplace. Boooring! :o)

How funny your mantel is only 6" deep! It looks great how it is though!

So many builders are giving us narrow mantels like this now. I guess it saves them money, but it's very annoying if you own one and can't set anything on it without worrying about it falling off! Your fireplace looks beautiful, though. Thanks for sharing it with us! -Julia

Mantels are so beautiful. It's rare you see a fireplace in a house here in Florida. My Mother in law has a fake one, and even though it's cute, I can't bring myself to buy a fake one. LOL Your mantel is decorated so nicely- so simple and just beautiful.

I love the mantel. Ours is like this ugly plain one just out of dry wall. One of these days I would really love for my husband to build a pretty wood one over it. Someday I guess. You are such a good decorator.

Love what you have done (Kijsa has another one that is only 5" deep- so we didn't show it-teehee- those are hard to do anything with, other than hang beautiful paintings like yours!!) Love the banner too- fun & festive. Can't wait to see more pics when you enlarge the mantel- it is lovely already!!

Your mantel looks lovely--I love white mantels. I detest ours--it is an oak ledge above a tile fireplace surround. No wood coming down the sides of the fireplace at all.

It is very common here to have mantels that are 6 inches or so deep--I had no idea that was unusual in other areas of the country.

It's beautiful! I really like the idea of adding extra crown to give it more depth.

It's always so puzzling why builders do such silly things. Like making porches that are barely wide enough to walk across much less put a chair on.

I guess it saves them a few pennies.
